1911 Hand Hewn Barn

Apr 8, 2014   //   by Vince Walsh

Circa 1911 30′ X 50′

By all accounts, this barn is beautiful, gorgeous and amazing! It is 50 feet wide running east-west, and 30 feet running north-south. Only visual damage is north west corner there is a little charring on one beam and eight square feet of siding missing. No structural damage. No racking, no settling. Apparently erected in 1911, it was used as a dairy barn. The “walk out ” basement level is entirely white wash- walls and ceiling, including all beams and posts. Posts & Beams are all hand-hewn by broad axe and adz. They are joined by traditional mortise and tenon joints, held by wooden pegs. Some rafters and some of the floor joists (beams) are mostly rounded with one flat side. Floor and other boards appear to have been cut by a circular saw. Species of wood: As of this writing, not 100% known; however most of the big beams are definitely hardwood, with an educated guess of a type of hickory. The bark found on several beams is tight and flat, not thick- similar to Beech but with a hickory-like pattern. Some posts in the basement appear to be pine. Siding is pine, as are most floor boards. Hardwood slabs were used for some upper level decking, as were young whole trees.

  • Vince saved us a ton of money by recommend we limb our trees as opposed to taking them down completely. Our property has completely transformed into a “Garden of Eden”. We are so glad Vince convinced us not to clear cut our property. Thanks a bunch Vince! We are looking forward to you and your guys coming back to trim our apple trees.
